DRIVING THROUGH WATER
Navigating through water requires more than just a capable vehicle; it demands knowledge and preparation. When driving through flooded roads or other water, understanding the upper limits of your vehicle and relevant environmental factors is crucial.
It is important to practise safe water crossing techniques, assessing water depth and the current before attempting to cross. By taking care and following guidelines for your off-road vehicle you can avoid water damage.
WADE SENSING
Wade Sensing is a revolutionary technology available in Range Rover, Discovery and Defender. By using sensors to monitor water depth and alerting the driver to potential hazards, Wade Sensing can help minimise risk. When driving through deep water, selecting Wade Mode raises your suspension height to reach the maximum wading depth.
To calculate the depth of water around the vehicle, select the Wade Sensing option from your 4x4 infotainment screen. The Touchscreen displays the results along with the maximum wading depth.
The Touchscreen and instrument panel display warning messages as the vehicle approaches its maximum wading depth. If the Wade Sensing feature limitations are exceeded, the Touchscreen image will turn grey and the water level will not be displayed.
ADVICE FOR DRIVING THROUGH WATER
Prior to entering any body of water, it's essential to assess the depth and how strong the current is to ensure you do not exceed your vehicle's wading capability. In static, shallower water, explore on foot and use a stick to gauge the depth – or watch another vehicle go through. It’s a good idea to keep a pair of wellies or waders in the boot.
Approach the water at a steady, slow pace. Lower the vehicle in gently, keep the vehicle moving slowly. Once in the water, stay focused and keep the wheels straight. Upon exiting, gently apply brakes. If your vehicle has Wade Mode this will help configure for deep water. When you exit wade mode, the vehicle does a swipe of the brakes to remove residue. These tips ensure a more controlled water crossing experience, fully utilising the capabilities of your Range Rover, Discovery or Defender.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DRIVING THROUGH WATER?
After successfully navigating through water, look for signs of water ingress around the vehicle. Check for debris or mud that might have lodged in the undercarriage, brakes, bodywork or radiated. Test your brakes gently to ensure they are functioning correctly, as they may be less effective immediately after water exposure.
Promptly addressing any issues can help prevent long-term damage and maintain the integrity and performance of your vehicle. Regular maintenance and post-wading checks can assist with preserving the vehicle’s condition and ensuring its readiness for future off-road adventures.
