THE BIG FIVE

Lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. These mammals are known as the ‘Big Five’ in Africa and are the figureheads of the continent’s mission to protect its endangered species. They are also the names for each of the five Defenders that were sent to Kenya to support this year’s marathon.

As runners battled through the punishing heat of the African plains, Defender was on hand to support participants, transport medical and race staff to where they were needed, as well as ferry media teams around the course across its challenging terrain.

GOING THE DISTANCE

The significance of this event extends far beyond the finish line. Funds raised through the marathon play a pivotal role in supporting conservation efforts on the reserve.
But its impact doesn’t stop there.

Recognising the intricate relationship between wildlife and communities, the marathon also channels resources into supporting the local community, investing in education and healthcare for those living near the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.

During Defender’s time at the marathon, we connected participants and advocates with the communities they are supporting. Transporting and hosting events in nearby villages, we brought people together to see the education and infrastructure projects that are having a positive impact on local lives every day.

It is projects like these that epitomise Defender and Tusk’s joint mission to overcome the challenges in sub-Saharan Africa. After all, creating real change is a marathon, not a sprint.
